Pilates at Cunningham Children's Home
Megan Guenther is beginning her second year as a volunteer teaching Pilates to 6 or 7 wonderful girls who live at Cunningham Children’s Home in Urbana. Known affectionately around the studio as “The Girls”, the students, aged 15 to 17, take their Pilates seriously. All of them participate in a weekly Mat class at CCH, while one or two also receive at least one weekly individual lesson at the studio. The Girls work hard and some have advanced to the high Intermediate level. In mid-August, our instructors put on a choreographed group “performance” for some of them, demonstrating the Advanced work on the Reformer, Cadillac and Ladder Barrel. We hoped to inspire them to continue their good work and, perhaps, even begin one-on-one lessons at the studio. The Girls described the performance as “very cool” and “off the chain” (which, by the way, is a really, really good thing).

Janice presents at Romana's Pilates Convention in Las Vegas
Janice presented two lectures for the annual Romana's Pilates Convention which was held at Planet Hollywood in Las Vegas August 9 - 11. The annual convention qualifies as the required continuing education for Romana's Pilates certified instructors. Noel Chase of The Pilates Center joined Janice at the convention and came back refreshed, enthusiastic and ready to take her clients up to the next level of work!

"Continued Learning" workshop March 10 & 11 at The Pilates Center

On March 10-11, 2007, Janice held a workshop for 16 Certified Pilates instructors at her studio. Instructors came from Chicago, St. Louis, Springfield, IL and included Toni Manzanares from Barcelona, as well as the instructors at the Pilates Center. Janice taught lessons on Saturday and gave a workshop in "Training the Eye" on Sunday. Kim Scholl, PT and recently certified Pilates instructor, added her insights from the physical therapy point of view. Sunday began with an advanced mat and then three of Janice's clients volunteered to come in and be scrutinized by the group. Discussions then ensued on how to find the best way to help each client with their particular issues.

Given the success of this seminar, Janice and Kim are planning the next "Continued Learning" seminar for early fall. If you are interested in being on the email list of teachers that will be notified of these seminars, please contact Janice through this website.

New Apprentices
Please welcome Megan Guenther and Leigh O'Malley, the Pilates Center's newest apprentices. Megan has left her lawyering practice to become certified in Pilates so that she can donate her teaching time to high school girls at risk. Leigh is an exercise nut from way back and although she is still a professional at the University of Illinois, wants to teach Pilates on her off hours.
Watch for "Apprentice Specials" to be offered by spring of 2006! Apprentice specials are opportunities to try Pilates with an apprentice at a reduced rate.

Janice Teaches Teachers
Janice Dulak took time from her busy schedule to teach two seminars this year for Certified Instructors. In the summer, Janice visited Melissa Flores' studio, Pilates for Life in St. Louis. She taught private lessons and presented a five hour seminar in "Understanding the Basics for Advanced Work." In the fall Janice presented the same seminar for over 25 instructors at Linda Tremain's Fitness Foundations in the Chicago area.

"Pilates for Dressage Riders"
Janice Dulak book, Pilates for Dressage Riders, will be available in 2006. Janice had a little too much fun this summer riding her home-bred Oldenburg Verband gelding, Rubaiyat, and was a bit remiss in getting the final manuscript to Half Halt Press, the publishers of the book. The work on Rubaiyat paid off with the three year old competing and winning the Introductory High Point Champion of the Indiana Dressage Society's fall show in October.
Janice has limited availability for clinics to introduce the Pilates work to dressage riders. Please call the studio for more information.
